CHRISTMAS IS COMING!!!!!!!!

The children have been really excited this week, there has been so much going on!

I hope you enjoyed the children's performance of 'Born in a Barn'. They worked really, really hard and I'm sure you will agree it was worth it, they were brilliant!

Tuesday afternoon is our Christmas party, a snack and drink will be provided. Children can bring in clothes to change into.

On Wednesday morning the whole school will be watching the annual Christmas pantomime. This year it is 'Rapunzel'.

End of term, just to remind you is Friday and school closes at 2pm.

Good afternoon, we have been busy rehearsing for the Christmas concert this week. The children are really enjoying performing and singing. They are very excited for you to come and see them next week.

In maths the children used a variety of resources to support their learning and enjoyed navigating the beebots around the classroom.

Next week, the children we will be recapping all topics taught this term to consolidate their learning.

In English the children created their own version of a personal recount on their favourite lost toy.

Next week, the children will learn to write a calligram which will be centred around Christmas.

I am going to give you a list of changes to the timetable so that you can see what is going to happen over the next 2 weeks.

Hello, we have had another very busy, fun week in Year 2.

In English the children enjoyed creating a recount and sequencing events from our class trip.

Next week, they will be continuing the topic on recount, this will be centred on the book ‘Dogger’. The children will describe the characters feelings, create a wanted poster along with creating a recount using adverbs of time. The children will finish the week by creating a personal recount.

In maths the children enjoyed learning measurement. They measured a variety of objects around the classroom using different rulers.

Next week, we will be focusing on adding, subtracting, doubling and halving 2-digit numbers using an understanding of place value.

Next week we will be rehearsing for the Christmas Concert. On Wednesday we will be having a full-dress rehearsal, so if possible, could the costumes be in school by then.

Some of the children are dressing up as animals for the Christmas Concert and we will paint their faces accordingly. If you do not wish your child to have his/her face painted (because of allergies) please let us know.

Thank you for all your donations for the Christmas Fayre, they are greatly appreciated.
Each year we make a class Christmas hamper for a raffle prize at the fayre. Could you please send in an item to go into the hamper by Wednesday the 5th December. This can be anything such as chocolates, wine and biscuits.

Hello
 It was a pleasure to take your children on our school trip to Hitchin museum, your children were exceptionally well behaved.  The children all said they had an amazing fun time, they especially enjoyed role playing and dressing up as Victorian children.

In English next week the children will be learning to write a recount. This will be centred on our trip to Hitchin museum. The children will create a story map, identify key events and sequence the events using adverbs of time and conjunctions to extend their sentence writing.

In maths we will continue to investigate measuring objects by estimating first then measuring using cubes, rulers and meter rulers.

The children are very excited for our Christmas show and we will now be practising our songs daily, please could your children start to bring in their costumes.

Hello, we have had a very busy fun week. The children enjoyed wearing odd socks on Monday for Anti-Bullying and bringing their teddies in today for Children in Need.




In English, the children wrote an explanation on how to make a bicycle move and what is a bicycle. They drew a detailed picture of a bicycle and included a flow chart.

Next week, the children will be practising their lines and songs for the Christmas show along with starting to perform with expression.

In maths, the children completed sums on addition and subtraction using a variety of resources and looking at different methods used to find the answers.

Next week, the children will be using a variety of vocabulary associated with position and movement. Towards the end of the week the children will compare measurements of lengths using centimetres and metres.

Our class trip is on Tuesday
Children will wear their school uniform and we will be having our lunch at the museum so please could your child bring in a labelled pack lunch.

Hello,

This week in English the children learnt how to write an explanation text. We looked at a variety of texts and discussed the layout and present tense. The children created their own explanation text on how to work a pencil sharpener.

Next week, the children will write an explanation text showing the stages and process of riding a bicycle along with a labelled diagram and flow chart on how bicycles move.

In maths the children carried out various activities to develop a good understanding on place value using 10p and 1p coins and 10 more or 10 less than a 2 digit-number.

Next week, the children will add and subtract 10, 11, 12, 20, 22 and 30 to any 2-digit number. Along with solving addition and subtraction problems using pictorial representations.

In geography the children learnt what a city is and identified some major capital cities around the world.

Next week they will explore the features of a city.

In science the children enjoyed observing the changes in ice especially when salt was added and collectively created a word bank of adjectives.

Next week the children will learn about Charles Macintosh.

Reminder Monday is Sharing Assembly at 9.00am for Sienna J, Isabella, Louis, Costa, Benjamin and Ava.
Next week it is Anti-Bullying week. The theme for this year is to choose respect over bullying. For the first day of anti-bullying week, which is November 12th, we would like the children to wear odd socks to school for ‘Odd Socks Day’.
On Thursday 15th we will be discussing safety on the internet which we will be adapting to suit the age of our children.
On Friday the 16th of November we will be supporting Children in Need. This will be a non-uniform day and the children can bring a teddy into school and a cake for the cake sale after school.

We made it – half term is here!

It was lovely to meet you all this week and discuss your child’s progress and how well the children have settled into Year 2.

Throughout the week the children used their imagination and created very detailed finger and hand puppets using a variety of materials. Some of the children found the sewing a little tricky but I was pleased they all persevered and succeeded in sewing their puppet. The children used their puppets to create a story and storyboard along with performing this to the class. The children very much enjoyed expressing their creative imagination.

Home learning
Following on the topic of puppets. I would like the children to create a moving puppet of their choice. We have looked at lots of different ideas. The children will discuss their character and materials they have used to the class.
Date for the puppets to be in by is 15th November 2018.

Next term:

Maths – Handling data, calculating measuring and understanding shape along with knowing and using number facts.

English – Explanations, recount and calligrams.

Science – Materials.

Geography – Life in the city.

R.E. – Muslim prayer and action and festivals including Christmas.

D&T/Art – Weaving and preparing fruit and vegetables.

PSHE – Celebrating difference.

ICT – Communicating and collaborating online.

With the cold weather potentially coming soon, could you please make sure that any extra clothing that comes in (gloves, scarfs, hats, etc.) is clearly labelled.

Hello,

This week we have been focusing on celebrating difference. We have enjoyed sharing many stories which have promoted lots of positive discussion. The children created a wonderful class book on ‘This is me’. We also joined in the school art display which will be filmed with the drone on Monday morning.

The children have enjoyed the story of 'Handa's Surprise' we looked at the different fruits that are eaten in the story and the children created a bar chart with their favourite tropical fruit.

We looked at in detail animal print and the children produced amazing pictures shading in with pencils, which is displayed on the wall in the classroom.

Next week the children will create finger and hand puppets. They will explore, cut and join fabrics with simple techniques along with reflecting and  evaluating their work throughout the process. We will link this to English and the children will produce a storyboard and perform their story using their finger/hand puppets.

In maths we will be carrying out numerous activities to consolidate the topics covered within the first half term.

Good afternoon everyone, another fun productive week in Year 2.

In English, the children enjoyed creating their own version of Rapunzel. The children worked very hard on their stories which were very imaginative and fun to read.

In maths the children created their own number line from a roll of paper and placed the number cards accordingly. The children also learnt the signs < and > and find 1 and 10 more or less using the 100-square from any 2-digit number.

In science we discussed natural materials and the children created a collage in small groups using all the resources in the playground.

In history the children enjoyed learning and discussing life as a child in a Victorian school.

Celebrating differences - Next week in school we are holding a themed week around celebrating differences. It is also 'Black History Month' so our activities will be linked to these events. We have lots of exciting stories and activities planned which I am sure the children will share with you.

Hello,

Another very busy productive week in Year 2 and the time has flown by!

Thank you to all who have returned the parent consultation reply slip, if I could have all of those in ASAP that would be fantastic. I am allocating slots and I will try my very best to accommodate to all your needs. Should you not be able to attend the allocated slot, let me know and I will aim to find another day or time which could accommodate you.

Thank you to everyone who was able to bring in a food donation for harvest - you have donated to a great cause.

In English the children enjoyed performing Rapunzel and created detailed sentences including conjunctions and adjectives.
Next week, the children will write their own story of Rapunzel. The children will change the characters and setting along with including conjunctions and adjectives in their story.

In maths the children were very creative in their symmetry of 2D shapes and enjoyed learning about the properties and right angles.
Next week, the children will begin to mark numbers on a land-marked line, compare and order numbers using < and > signs and find 1 and 10 more or less using the 100-square from any 2-digit number.

In science we discussed heating materials from solid to liquid then liquid to solid.
Next week, we will carry out an investigation on heating materials and observe the changes.

Hello all,

In English the children learnt a variety of versions of ‘Rapunzel’ they described the scene of the tower and forest and created a storyboard.

Next week, the children will write a series of discrete sentences that contain adjectives to describe the setting along with including commas and conjunctions. They will learn to convert present tense verbs into the past tense. They will finish the week writing a recount in first person and past tense.

In maths the children learnt to recite their number bonds to 20 and through various activities they looked at the pattern to bridge the number to 10 or 20, then add on until they reached their answer.

Next week, the topic is 2D shapes the children will be identifying and classifying 2D shapes, using a variety of sorting devices. The children will create Venn and Carroll diagrams in addition to investigating which shape tessellates.

In history the children very much enjoyed listening to Mr Berridge and learning how different Little Heath school was over 50 years ago. They were particularly shocked that the boys had to go to the toilet outside in a hut!

Next week, the children will research life as a child in a Victorian school.

In art the children drew the outside of the original entrance of Little Heath school, this is in the KS1 playground.

Next week, the children will begin to create an observational drawing of the school and include detail by shading.

In science the children experimented with a variety of objects, they altered the material objects by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching. They explored the materials making observations and simple comparisons.

Next week, the children will learn that materials often change when they are heated.

A reminder that Monday morning is individual pupil photographs.

Unfortunately, due to the continued building work, there will be no Harvest Festival celebration this year, but the school is joining in with a food collection in conjunction with Dame Alice Owen School. Donations of non-perishable food items (tins etc) are welcome, which will be donated to a local charity.

Hello everyone, the children have worked very hard this week and I am so proud of them, they may be a little tired tonight.

In English the children enjoyed learning and reciting list poems and created a class book with their own poems in along with a poem on ‘Things I did lately’.

Next week, we will start our topic on traditional tales. We will start with the story of Rapunzel. The children will be able to recognise the good and bad characters, make comparisons from exploring a modern version of Rapunzel and retell the story including performing. 

In maths the children learnt number bonds to 20 and created word problems to consolidate their learning.

Next week, the children will continue to look at number patterns to solve more difficult additions and subtractions and double numbers to 15.

In history Mr Berridge (ex caretaker and currently lunchtime supervisor of Little Heath) will visit the class to give the children an insight of how schooling was when he was at this school as a little boy, the lessons taught and how the building and classes have changed.

In science we will continue to research use of everyday materials.

In ICT the children have been practising their keyboard skills and getting familiar with the layout of the keyboard using Microsoft word and we will repeat this lesson  next week.

In art the children will be sketching the outside of the school. First we will do an observation walk around the school and then the children will learn how to  shade using a variety of pencils.

In PSHE we will continue our topic on ‘being me in my world’ focusing on making the class a safe and fair place.

In religious education the children have been learning and exploring why light, a tree and water in Christianity is such an important symbol. Next week we will explore the important symbols in Judaism.

The children know their group and they can learn both sets of spellings if they would like to.

Good afternoon, we have had a busy full week back.

This week in English, the children have enjoyed learning a range of list poems. They created their own list poem on Autumn along with performing in groups to the class with wonderful actions.

Next week, we will continue our topic on poetry. The children will learn two poems ‘Things I have been doing lately’ by Alan Ahlberg and ‘Tell me mama’ by John Lyons. We will discuss in detail the layout and vocabulary. The children will compose a list using commas and record questions using capital letters and question marks. Throughout the week we will be also concentrating on handwriting. The children will create a poem and write in their best handwriting for our class book which will be displayed in our reading corner.

In maths, the children used a variety of resources estimating and ordering numbers.

Next week, we will start with re visiting number bonds to 6,7,8,9 and 10 and begin to learn related subtraction facts, we will also learn all the number bonds to 20.

In history we were very lucky to be provided with a log book which was from Little Heath school in 1898. The children enjoyed listening to the notes recorded by the secretary and we all commented on how so many children did not attend school due to illness whooping cough, measles and how different some of the lessons were.

Next week, we will be researching what schooling was like when our school was built.

In science, the children looked at and discussed a variety of materials.

Next week, we will be discussing that some materials occur naturally, and some do not. The children will distinguish between the material and the object made from it.

The children will be practising these spellings throughout the week during morning work.

Good morning and welcome back, the children have settled in extremely well into their new bright classroom.

Next week in English the children will be starting out poetry topic for 2 weeks this will be on list poems. We will start with reading a variety of list poems looking at the layout, vocabulary and understanding the meaning of the poems. The children will choose to read two poems with fluency, reading clearly and loudly and in small groups they will perform their poem. 

Next week in maths the children will be: estimating and counting a number of objects up to 100, locating numbers on the bead lines and 100 square, comparing numbers and find the numbers in between, order three numbers and order 2 digit numbers.

In science we will be start our topic on everyday materials, next week the children will be observing and discussing the use of everyday materials.

In history we will be comparing schools in the past and present.
The trip I wish to organise to the British Schools Museum in Hitchin will cost approximately £18.50 (the majority is the cost of the coach) please let me know if you feel this is too expensive.

Please could your children bring in tracksuits and trainers for PE as the weather is starting to get colder.

Show 'n' tell will be on Friday afternoons, GREEN book bags will start. 
The order will be Green, Yellow, Red and Blue.

Spellings will start next week.

Year 2

Hello everyone, I hope you had a wonderful fun summer.
Firstly sincere apologies for my final blog for year 1, I did publish it but it somehow disappeared!
Mrs Wells and myself wish to thank you for your very generous gifts and kind words. I am so looking forward to teaching the children again next year. I have been into school and our new classroom which is very white, will be ready for Wednesday.

Here is an overview of the topics we will be covering this term.

English we will start with poetry, memorising and reciting poems.
Maths we will be counting and understanding numbers, using and applying mathematics along with learning shape and measurement.
Science we will be learning uses of everyday materials.
ICT the children will be practising the keyboard and using the internet.
History we will be learning the history of the school and Victorian schools. I am in the process of organising our first trip to the British Schools Museum in Hitchin for the end of October.
Geography will be next term but I will also link in with History as the topic is on the school and its surroundings-where do I live?
Art we will be experimenting with a variety of light and dark pencils and creating observational drawings of objects and the school.
Our PE timetable is:
Monday plimsolls only 11.00-11.30
Wednesday and Friday 1.15-2.15 full PE kit.
Show 'n' tell and spellings will not start until the following week and I will update the blog next Friday.
